FAQs

What is a Socratic Discussion/the Socratic Method?

Socratic discussions are based on the ancient Greek philosopher, Socrates, and his use of dialogue to help his pupils think for themselves. There is no set way of conducting a Socratic discussion, other than to include open-ended questions to inspire thinking. The Socratic Method involves a shared dialogue between teacher and students. The teacher leads by posing thought-provoking questions. Students actively engage by asking questions of their own. The discussion goes back and forth. (Please see our page on the Socratic Method here)

What will my child be doing for core subjects?

For the Elementary and Middle School groups you will need to select an adaptive online program for Math and LA. You are welcome to supplement with additional resources such as spelling workbooks, desired reading lists, typing programs, learning games and more. Your learner will work through these during core subject time.  (Please see our page on Adaptive Core Subjects here)

  • Early Learners are also welcome but not required to choose an adaptive program. They will need to have some material to work through during core subject time. We are happy to recommend ideas and help you navigate this.

Am I required to provide their core subject materials?

Yes. This is an excellent way for parents to be involved in what their child is learning. This will also allow parents to easily log onto the programs they selected for their learners and check their progress. You will need to supply whatever is necessary for your child to complete their work, such as a tablet or laptop, workbooks, ext.

As a part of our enrollment process we will have a parent and guide meeting. During this meeting we will discuss any special accommodations your learner may need.

How will food and lunches work?

You will be responsible to supply a lunch and snacks for your child. This is the best way for us to ensure all dietary safety needs are being met. There may be an occasion where there is additional food on the premises. For example, we may be learning about Asia and decide to have them try their hands at dumplings. In the event that there is additional food we will do our best to notify the parents.

Does the Phoenix Academy schedule correlate with the public school schedule?

You can find a copy of the Phoenix Academy schedule here. Our schedule is set so that most major holidays are observed. We believe quality time with family is crucial to a child's development so we have long breaks in between each session. We are confident our schedule has found a great balance between breaks/vacation time and the academic and project based learning we hope to accomplish.
